Both ecological and cultural environments are complex systems woven

from countless "constants" and "variables." How can we find a "formula" for

sustainable development that combines eternal principles with

ever-changing demands? By applying innovative thinking, we can propose

diverse, inclusive, and sustainable solutions, providing new ideas for the

development of future human habitats and cultural environments.

In his talk, Professor Francesco Zurlo advocated for addressing increasingly

complex and diverse environmental challenges through design. He

emphasized the importance of interdependence and a deep

understanding of complexity, calling for innovative perspectives to

optimize the relationship between humans and their environment.

“We need to center our thinking around the concept of interdependence.

placing care at the heart of our activities, deepening our understanding of

complexity, and fostering harmonious coexistence between people,

nature, technology, and society.”

In his speech, Professor Wang Xiaoxin elucidated the relationship between

“change and constancy” within the constants (cultural heritage) and

variables (innovative development) of traditional arts and crafts. Through

multidimensional case studies, he explored the integration of

craftsmanship, culture, and regions and the development path for them.

“Chinese traditions hold immense power. We need constants, or cultural

heritage, so that tradition can be creatively transformed for the present.

At the same time, this era calls for greater use of variables, or innovative

development to foster foresight and openness, embrace foreign cultures

and shape a more internationalized contemporary Chinese culture.”

The Role of Museums in Design

Innovation

Professor Andrea Cancellato, Director of the ADI Design Museum — one of

the largest design museums in Europe — emphasized the role of museums

in driving design innovation. He advocated for responding to social needs

through openness and inclusiveness of cultural venues, facilitating

collaboration between designers and communities to promote cultural

heritage and ecological coexistence. Museums, he argued, are becoming

vital platforms for shaping the future of society.

“Beyond the sheer increase in the number of museums and the change of

their roles, we have every reason to believe that the rise of creative

professions over the past two to three decades is closely linked to the

evolution of the museum’s role — particularly in the field of design. This

calls for reflection on the nature of the relationship between museums

and design. It’s not just about designing new museums to accommodate

their expanding responsibilities, but also about exploring other potential

intersections between museums and design.”

Sustainable Design Practices at

Edinburgh College of Art

Professor Juan Cruz began by highlighting the diverse initiatives

undertaken by Edinburgh College of Art for sustainable development. He

introduced the school’s strategic efforts to achieve near net - zero

emissions and its commitment to advancing sustainability in teaching,

research, and practice. The idea of sustainability is integrated across

curriculum design, projects, and artistic practices, while community

engagement is encouraged.

“We must ensure sustainability, treat both the environment and people

with fairness and justice, and enable everyone to thrive socially,

psychologically, emotionally, and economically on the rich resources our

planet provides.”

"We need to ensure that we can collaborate with AI and adapt to future

rules and emerging challenges. This requires an understanding of how AI

works and its potential impacts. Therefore, future students must look

beyond the act of production itself amid evolving technologies and

understand the overall system — this is precisely what we mean when we

speak of variables and constants."

Professor Frances Corner emphasized that design education should foster

creativity and prepare students to bridge skill gaps in diverse

environments. The era of AI calls for higher educational goals — leveraging

technology to enhance human capabilities while cultivating students with

interdisciplinary knowledge to meet technological and environmental

challenges and drive sustainable development.

“We need to educate students to distinguish between what is real and

what is virtual — and to understand what that means. Digital tools are

meant to promote diversity in presentation. While we encourage the use

of diverse tools, we ultimately want students to recognize, from an early

stage, that we are designing for the real.

Through teaching practices and student works, Professor Claudine

Rousseau demonstrated how the School of Design and Technology at

London College of Fashion integrates traditional and modern technologies,

focuses on sustainable development and environmental impact, and drives

transformation in the fashion industry using digital tools and material

innovation.
