How can we respond to the changing times by breaking down the boundaries of traditional disciplines in the process of “breaking” and “establishing”? This forum will delve into how we can maintain disciplinary depth while embracing interdisciplinary breadth, exploring ways to build a network of innovative disciplines. From a perspective of dynamic intersection, we look ahead to the evolution of art and design education and cultivate interdisciplinary talents with comprehensive quality and creativity. |

Professor Yang Dongjiang, drawing on the success of four consecutive editions of ICADE, explored how technological advancement is blurring disciplinary boundaries in academic exchange and teaching practice. He advocated for educational innovation through interdisciplinary integration to meet the information age’s demand for cultivating knowledge, skills, and values in a more holistic manner.
“Technological progress and cultural diversity have led to increasingly complex design needs, presenting both challenges and opportunities for talent development. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is prompting art and design institutions worldwide to embrace the integration of art and technology, and to explore new educational models. In this context, it is essential for institutions to clearly distinguish between interdisciplinary collaboration and interdisciplinary subject, address the challenges and opportunities brought by AI, establish well-defined educational goals and philosophies, and explore broader, newer models for art education.”

The “Innocence” of Interaction

Drawing on his many years of experience in both the creative and education sectors, Professor Jussi Angesleva emphasized how the convergence of technology and art has reshaped disciplinary boundaries and facilitated cultural interaction.“Technology is not merely a tool for practical purposes — it is also an expression of cultural values.” He argued that design education should imbue global challenges with new cultural significances by fostering interdisciplinary and multidimensional integration, and by encouraging “innocent” interaction, while also enhancing the social value of technology. |

Professor Zhang Lei, building on the teaching practices of the Department of Industrial Design at Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, advocated for design education that develops solid foundational skills while transcending traditional boundaries."Our educational system emphasizes cultivating students core compe tencies-including innovation, practice, design management, and problem-solving abilities. He further proposed prioritizing integration of industrial resources and international collaboration to "turn students into innovative talents with global perspectives who can leverage industrial resources to transform creativity into tangible outcomes,"ultimately addressing future global challenges.

In her talk, Professor Sarah Kenderdine shared how her research employs deepfake technology, digital twins, and data visualization to break down the boundaries between traditional art and science combining emerging technologies with cultural heritage.“Artistic creation with deepfake technology explores how today’s technologies can be combined to most effectively reproduce cultural artifacts. At the same time, it functions as an algorithm within computer vision, capable of re-performing and re-processing what is “digitally visible.” Her work redefines the ways knowledge is transmitted, offering innovative pathways for historical narratives and societal memory. |

Professor Tai Lee Siang pointed out that AI is reshaping the boundaries of design, driving its democratization and enhancing its efficiency. However, he emphasized the continued need for interdisciplinary collaboration and a human-centered perspective. “Artificial intelligence has not yet come into conflict with human production… It can process information more quickly, make accurate predictions, solve complex problems, quantify the unquantifiable, and free us from repetitive tasks.” He noted that future education should aim to cultivate designers who possess both techniques and artistic creativity, thereby promoting the integration of technology and society. |

Professor Shi Danqing began his talk with the concept of “design under Earth’s gravitational conditions,” suggesting that future design should extend toward three-dimensional — and even higher - dimensional — deep space experience design. “In space, there is no gravity. Many things we take for granted must be redefined and redesigned through interdisciplinary creativity.” He advocated for exploring innovative design methods in zero-gravity environments through interdisciplinary collaboration, thereby reimagining human life and opening up new possibilities for future diverse lifestyles from both technological and cultural perspectives. |
